I wouldn't power wash, there are many eletrical components in the S4, and because of heatsoak, many of the wires crack or fracture over time. Besides that, its not necessary. Hand scrub dirty areas with a soft bristle brush.

Id suggest doing it with a cold motor, running. Then spray areas with simple green, hand wash, and very light pressure rinse. Then go for a easy drive to make sure everything is dry and kosher

Hood up under an isolated thunderstorm usually works for me...
No, but like someone said I would never hold a power washer to my engine even a hose. Just too many electrical components. Simple Green on grimy dirty spots and then scrub. Make sure not to spray Simple Green on your belts or anything. Just be sensible.

Motor and harness was out when I pressure washed this time. But I have pressure washed every single engine bay of every single car I have owned, well over 20, including the S4 and my A4. Never one single issue. I do believe its an old wives tail that's sticking around from the old days. I'd have to believe automobile manufactures realize people want to clean their cars and engine bays and plan for this by sealing everything up good and tight. And sometimes going through a puddle hits your engine with more force than a hose. But to each his own.

You wont have a problem if you dont leave the hose in the same spot for a long period of time. And when your done hit it with some compressed air to help get the water out while the engine is running. Ive done plenty of engine bays like that without a single problem. But im not using a pressure washer just a normal garden hose.

I agree that they make them pretty water tight, I would have no hesitations pressure washing a newer car (5 years or younger). That said, after 8-10 years, a lot of water proof covers/seals/coatings may have corroded, especially in the electrical system. Personally, I know my car has some wiring bits with cracked rubber covers. I wouldn't pressure wash mine, I might use a regular hose, but probably just spot wash stuff.

i detail cars for a living... for 3 major dealerships in iowa city. EVERY single used car that is traded in or purchased at an auction comes through my shop to get cleaned. every car gets the engine bay first sprayed with a degreaser, pressure washed with high pressure then sprayed with a vinyl shining product. all while the engine is running, then the engine is kept idleing with the rest of the exterior is rinsed, body prepped, rinsed again then washed and rinsed once more. NEVER had a problem with any of the cars....

And you've never had any problems? I used to work for a dealership that powerwashed (hell, they all do) and we had probably 1 in 50 cars have problems afterwards. Most of the time it was just wet ignition stuff that dried out, but not something I'd want done to my car. If things don't happen right now, who knows what can corrode later. If you are careful and don't get too close, you likely won't have any problems, but if you are looking for a safer way:
-Put a cardboard box under your engine to collect grease (unless you like a nasty driveway)
-Car specific degreaser, personally I like Meguiars. Spray all over cold engine bay, avoiding electrical parts. Avoid simple green, it turns aluminum stuff chalky white if not rinsed immediately.
-Soft bristle brush, used to agitate.
-Rinse with hose (no nozzle).
-Wipe down whatever you can
-Start engine and let it warm up

i think some are being WAY too cautious. What I do i pop the hood, engine is idling, and spray down a degreaser. Spray with the powerwasher, but not too close up. I typically hold the nozzle about three feet away with a more powerful powerwasher. Make sure all the degreaser is gone, leave the car idling while you wash the exterior and go for a 30 min drive right afterwards.

Get the engine bay thoroughly clean with degreaser and a soft brush, carefully rinse, then dry (doesn't have to be perfectly dry, but wipe off all the standing water and puddles).
Spray the entire engine bay with CD2, let it sit about 10 minutes, then close the hood and idle the car for another 10 minutes. I kid you not, this stuff makes everything look brand spanking new. No weird residue, no downside to it at all. It's a thin resin coating that sets up with the help of the heat from the engine. Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm about to powerwash my engine bay, since I was driving (like an idiot) without the oil cap on. Thankfully the oil cap was caught underneath the engine cover, but only lost a quart, quart and a half of oil... I guess my engine has really good vacuum? maybe Audi designed the oil pan and baffle well to idiot-proof stupid morons like myself that forgot to put the oil cap back on? I think I dodged a howitzer shell with my stupidity since the car still pulls very hard and silky smooth idle. Anyways, oil got sprayed everywhere, and brake cleaned most of what I could, especially around the accessory belt, and got most of the oil cleaned off. Just need to wash the rest of the engine and get it clean again. Definitely need to change the oil at this point. Don't know what the hell got in the oil, don't care. It needs to be changed before the next drive.
Given how far we've progressed in the world of powerwashing since the early days, has anyone ever used a foam cannon and foamed up the engine bay, let it sit for a couple minutes, and then spray the engine bay with a 40* tip? Or is it still best to stick with an APC, then spray down with a 40* tip?

Just my opinion-
I would simply wash down everything with an APC and hose it off...repeat....
For a final wash use(NO laughing now) WINDEX, hose it off, use a leaf blower to get rid of large puddles then let the car idle away for 15min-DONE
I don't like using a power washer-too abusive. Since your stuff was clean before your oil cap issue this should work real good.
When everything is dry I would go over all of the rubber goodies with that BMW rubber treatment -GummiPfleger.( I don't think I spelled that correctly) I pour that stuff in a small container an apply with a small brush.
Returns the rubber to a like new appearance.
I've used this method, yearly, since 2001 on my B5.
PS- DON'T use a foaming tire cleaner as a dressing---you run the chance of gluing your plastic wire connectors together....

Just did this the other day.
I used a good water based APC, and a bunch of brushes. I did powerwash the front bumper area (bumper was off), as nothing back there was ever cleaned before, and powerwashed the underside too. On the top side, I simply used the water from the gun without being pressurized....a mild rinse. Worked great. Dried it with air and a few towels, dressed it with Chemical Guys stuff (spray on microfiber, wipe). Worked great

Thanks for the input, guys. I guess APC and hose is still the way to go. I like spray nine myself because it doesn't seem as caustic as purple power, though have to go a couple rounds extra with cleaning versus purple power. What do you guys use?
If power washing is too harsh, how about the garden hose foam canon (like Griot's) since it's not a strong stream, coats everything with soap, then just disconnect the cannon from the garden hose and wash down? I just want that oil burning smell gone sooner rather than later. I know where the remaining residue is, but I don't want to dry out my hoses any further than I already did. And what sucks is they were brand new when I did the cooling system earlier. Ugh...
Aww yes, I have GummiPfleger!! I love that stuff. Good call! I can't believe I didn't think about that yesterday.

I use Bilt Hamber APC as of late. Water based, doesn't smell foul, can be diluted anywhere from nothing, to 50:1. I use it around 10:1. I'm still on the first 5 liter bottle I bought a year ago. Lots of stuff out there, including regular old Simple Green

Well my only issue with Simple Green and Purple Power is that they are VERY caustic. And when you start diluting it, it basically performs like water. There's no in between. But glad you mentioned Bilt Hamber. They are hard to get (locally), but their car wash shampoo is AMAZING! You can fill your foam cannon bottle with only 2 oz of this stuff and the rest with warm water, and holy cow does it work like a mofo! I mainly use this product in the winter time to clean off salt and grime from the winter months around here because it works well enough where you barely need to do any contact cleaning. I'm looking for a foam cannon or something related. The only pressure washer we had got fugged last year, (dumb neighbor doesn't know the difference in 2 stroke and 4 stroke...). Is it worth it to invest in a new one or do those attachments for regular hoses work alright? And yeahhh... this guy

It's definitely worth investing in a new electric pressure washer, probably an 1800 to 2000 PSI MAX. Any more than that, and you're guaranteed to be knocking paint off, or doing damage if you go in close enough and use a low degree fitting. If you're using the pressure washer for house needs as well, then definitely go gas powered, but be careful on the fitting you use when washing your car, and don't go too close.
As far as a foam cannon to use, they all basically do the same thing. I use the Griot's Garage Brilliant Finish Foam Cannon and it works great for what I need. In the winter time, it helps a great deal, especially since the car washes will be washing hundreds of cars at a time and all that salt and grime will be marring your clearcoat as they get transferred from car to car. And also invest in a smaller lance as well. The long neck is good for hard to reach or high areas of a home. On a car, you don't need a long lance, and you may accidentally bump into your car with the longer lance and chip the paint. Washing the roof will definitely be a pain with a longer lance since you have to hold the wand much higher.
And as far as chemicals to wash your car, definitely get an ASS Purpose Cleaner as well. LMAO! You don't need to spray the entire car with the APC, just the rockers, lower quarter panel and fenders, and lower part of the rear bumper. An APC breaks up grime, tar, bugs, dead jogger blood/road biker blood very well. Surely minimizes contact washing which will be a boon in the winter, plus great for cleaning underneath the car as well, to remove salt and other grime as well.

I've used Easy Off oven cleaner with decent results in the case of engine surface oil residue/gunk buildup.
It melts oily crap away pretty decently.
Just have to be careful with Easy Off, It removed the lettering right off my kitchen stove top dials.
Wooops..

Oof, Easy Off is serious business. I don't think I'll go that caustic. LoL!
But yeah, will be washing the engine bay today and will be using Gunk degreaser. The oil burning smell is definitely going away as I drove the car more, but still. Want a nice and clean engine bay. Helps keep things cool as well without a lining of poop and debris.
